Toyota Recall Targets South Florida

MIAMI (CBSMiami/AP) – South Floridians should pay heed to Toyota’s latest recall. The company said cars in high-humidity areas could experience serious air bag problems.

It was announced on Monday that about 247,000 would be recalled. The recall posed by U.S. safety regulators covers several older model vehicles.

Here is the list of models covered in the recall:

  • Corolla, 2003-2005
  • Matrix, 2003-2005
  • Sequoia, 2002-2005
  • Tundra, 2003-2005
  • Pontiac Vibe, 2003-2005

Inflators can rupture in air bags manufactured by parts supplier Takata, causing metal fragments to fly out when bags are inflated in crashes. The problem has caused serious injuries. So far, automakers have recalled about 12 million vehicles worldwide because of the problem.

The recall covers vehicles in South Florida, along the Gulf Coast, in Puerto Rico, Hawaii, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, Saipan and American Samoa.
