MONTREAL – Animal welfare advocates are calling for the immediate removal of foxes and minks they say are being housed in inhumane conditions south of Montreal.

A spokeswoman for the Montreal branch of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals says she has visited the unnamed fur farm twice and that the animals are in poor health and living in horrific conditions.

Alanna Devine says the animals were in a desperate state upon her last visit this month, with dehydration, cramped quarters and malnutrition among the issues.

Her organization has suggested criminal charges be laid and Devine insists the animals need to be removed to get better care.

But the provincial government department that oversees wild animals says it is willing to give the owner of the fur farm a chance to improve conditions.
